General Motors unveils new V8 engines for 2027 Silverado and Sierra

General Motors is introducing a sixth-generation small-block V8 engine lineup for its redesigned 2027 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 pickup trucks. The new family includes the 5.7-liter L76, producing 402 horsepower and 428 pound-feet of torque, and the 6.6-liter L78, which delivers 481 horsepower and 501 pound-feet of torque. The L78 is noted as the most powerful naturally aspirated V8 in its class.

In a strategic divergence from competitors like Ford and Ram, who are increasingly focusing on hybrid powertrains, GM is doubling down on internal combustion and diesel options. The company is promoting an improved 3.0-liter diesel engine that, when paired with an optional large fuel tank, can achieve a highway driving range exceeding 900 miles.

Technological updates for the new V8 engines include higher compression ratios, larger throttle bodies, and redesigned intake manifolds. Additionally, GM is moving toward further digitization by replacing the traditional oil dipstick with a digital oil level gauge in the new V8 models, integrating the information directly into the vehicle's user interface.
