General Motors schedules 2028 launches for new Chevrolet Onix and Equinox EV

General Motors announced that the next generation of its compact Chevrolet Onix will debut in 2028. The model will be built on Hyundai's K2 platform, shared with the Hyundai i20, and will feature larger dimensions, a longer wheelbase, increased cargo capacity, and design cues such as two‑tone paint and deeper side creases. The new Onix is also expected to accommodate electrified powertrains and advanced driver‑assist systems.

At the same time, GM plans to end the first‑generation Chevrolet Equinox EV ahead of schedule and replace it with a dedicated BEV‑N architecture. The revamped Equinox EV is slated for a global launch between late 2028 and early 2029. The shift aims to lower production costs, improve cabin space, and separate the affordable EV line from higher‑priced Cadillac and Chevrolet models after a slowdown in U.S. sales.

Both initiatives reflect GM’s broader strategy to partner with Hyundai for platform sharing and to accelerate its electric‑vehicle roadmap.
