General Motors targets 2028 launch for eyes-off driving technology

General Motors CEO Mary Barra announced that the automaker is on track to launch eyes-off, hands-off driving technology by 2028. The new system is intended to allow motorists to divert their attention from the road under certain conditions, representing a significant advancement over the current Super Cruise system, which requires drivers to remain attentive.

The technology is scheduled to debut in the electric Cadillac Escalade IQ before being expanded to other vehicle models. Barra noted that recent testing has shown impressive progress toward this goal.

This strategic shift follows GM’s December 2024 decision to exit the Cruise robotaxi business after investing over $10 billion. The company is now redirecting its resources toward autonomous systems for consumer-owned vehicles rather than commercial taxi or bus services. Barra defended the pivot, stating that the company retained much of the Cruise team to focus on personal vehicle autonomy and expressed confidence that autonomous technology will not diminish the demand for privately owned cars.
