General Motors to bring CarPlay back to 2027 truck models
General Motors is revising its previous strategy to phase out smartphone interfaces in favor of its own software. The automaker will introduce a new infotainment interface for its 2027 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra models that includes support for both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
To maintain control over the user experience, GM is implementing a split-screen approach. Instead of allowing CarPlay or Android Auto to occupy the entire display, these services will operate within a dedicated window alongside the vehicle’s native applications. This design allows drivers to access smartphone features like navigation and music while simultaneously viewing critical vehicle data, such as battery status, fuel consumption, or towing information, without switching menus.
This move represents a partial reversal of a 2023 announcement in which GM stated it would stop using CarPlay and Android Auto in its upcoming electric vehicles. The company previously argued that a proprietary system would provide a more integrated software experience, a decision that faced criticism from customers. While the new split-screen system is confirmed for upcoming internal combustion engine trucks, it remains unclear if this compromise will be extended to GM’s electric vehicle lineup.
