General Motors to produce hybrid SUVs at Michigan plant
General Motors intends to invest in its Lansing Delta Township assembly plant in Michigan to prepare for the production of hybrid versions of three popular SUVs: the Chevrolet Traverse, Buick Enclave, and GMC Acadia.
This move represents a strategic shift for the automaker, which had previously focused heavily on an all-electric vehicle strategy. CEO Mary Barra recently indicated to analysts that hybrids will be integrated into multiple segments of the company's portfolio. While specific timelines for these models have not been disclosed, some new hybrid nameplates are planned as early as 2027.
The decision follows rising demand for hybrid vehicles in the United States as consumers seek alternatives to high gas prices. Data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration shows that conventional hybrids accounted for a 16% share of new light-duty vehicle sales in the third quarter of 2026, significantly outpacing the 6% share held by fully electric vehicles.
