General Motors unveils 8.3-liter Duramax V8 for 2027 trucks
General Motors has unveiled several updates for its upcoming 2027 model year truck lineup, including the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra. A major highlight is the introduction of the “Mongoose,” a new 8.3-liter Duramax V8 turbodiesel engine designed for heavy-duty pickups. This engine is positioned to compete directly with Ford’s 6.7-liter Power Stroke, which carries the internal codename “Scorpion.”
In addition to the new diesel engine, GM is introducing a sixth-generation Small Block V8, including 5.7L and 6.6L variants, and an enhanced 2.7-liter TurboMax engine for mid-sized models like the Colorado and Canyon. The 2027 Silverado 1500 will also feature a redesigned digital cockpit with a new software architecture that supports a split-screen and picture-in-picture layout for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
While the new infotainment interface improves phone mirroring on internal combustion engine (ICE) models, GM clarified that it is not reversing its decision to remove Apple CarPlay and Android Auto from its future electric vehicle (EV) lineup. The enhanced phone projection features are specific to gas-powered trucks and do not extend to the company's EV portfolio.
