General Ratko Mladic's health deteriorates as ICC rejects Serbian treatment request

General Ratko Mladic, serving a life sentence at the International Criminal Court detention centre in The Hague, has been described by his son Darko Mladic as being in "extremely poor" condition after two and a half years of repeated brain strokes that have left him largely unable to speak.

On 14 May the ICC President Graciela Gutiérrez‑Santana denied a Serbian defence request to allow Mladic temporary release for medical treatment in Serbia, stating that while his health is seriously compromised by chronic neurological, cardiovascular and renal problems, there is no acute deterioration that would justify humanitarian release. The court has repeatedly rejected similar petitions.
