Generation X to lead global spending through 2033

A report by NIQ indicates that Generation X is projected to lead global consumer spending through 2033, with an estimated $15.2 trillion in spending for 2025. This cohort is expected to maintain its position as the largest affluent spender until 2036.

Generation Z is identified as the fastest-growing and potentially wealthiest cohort in history. Its share of total generational spending is forecast to rise from 18.2% in 2026 to 19.3% by 2030, with affluent spending projected to reach $12.4 trillion by 2036. Notably, 53% of Gen Z consumers report using social media “buy” buttons.

Millennials are expected to remain the largest core spending market until 2036 as they enter their peak household spending years, though they face higher debt loads than previous generations at similar life stages. Meanwhile, the influence of Baby Boomers is tapering as younger generations gain power, though they remain significant in health and medical-related spending categories.
