Generation Z adopts analog devices amid rising tech costs
Members of Generation Z are increasingly turning to analog devices and ‘dumbphones’ as a response to rising technology costs and digital hyper-connectivity. This trend is driven by significant increases in the price of consumer electronics, with some component costs like DRAM memory rising fivefold in a single year and retail prices for electronics increasing by up to 20%.
Beyond economic necessity, the shift is fueled by a cultural phenomenon known as ‘anemoia’—a nostalgia for eras never personally experienced. Young consumers are opting for Walkmans, MP3 players, instant cameras, and basic flip phones to reduce digital distractions, manage expenses, and seek more intentional social interactions.
