Generation Z embraces analogue lifestyle to combat digital isolation
Generation Z is increasingly embracing analogue lifestyles as a way to find genuine human connection and combat the isolation often caused by excessive social media use. This trend includes a rise in interest in traditional media such as vinyl records, print media, film cameras, and journaling.
Specifically, there has been a notable surge in young adults joining penpal clubs and letter-writing schemes. Jennifer Bishop, founder of the London-based stationery shop London Letters, noted that handwritten correspondence provides a physical connection that serves as an antidote to digital isolation.
A survey by the Marmalade Trust involving 2,000 adults aged 18 to 29 highlighted the social challenges of the digital age: two-thirds of respondents reported skipping social plans to spend time online, and nearly half felt social media increased their sense of isolation. The shift toward analogue activities represents a move toward more intentional and meaningful social interactions.
