Generation Z faces rising social media fatigue and consumer pressure

Recent studies indicate growing fatigue among Generation Z regarding social media usage. A report by The Harris Poll and New York University reveals that many young users feel overwhelmed by constant connectivity and overexposure. Approximately 47% of surveyed youth expressed a desire for TikTok not to exist, while 50% felt the same about X, and 40% regarding Snapchat.

While social media is often associated with connection, 43% of respondents also link these platforms to feelings of isolation. In Spain, research by Control Estadístico de Procesos (SPC) found that 38% of young people would like to deactivate their accounts, though social pressure often prevents them from doing so.

Beyond mental fatigue, social media significantly impacts consumer behavior. The rise of influencer culture has led to increased impulse spending. To combat this, experts suggest ‘de-influencing’—the practice of making independent purchasing decisions rather than following trends driven by content creators. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) advises consumers to remain vigilant regarding undisclosed commercial relationships between influencers and brands to avoid unnecessary expenses.
