Generation Z protests rise globally over economic instability
Members of Generation Z, born between 1997 and 2012, are engaging in widespread mobilizations across multiple nations to protest housing crises, inflation, and a lack of future prospects. These movements have already contributed to political shifts in countries such as Nepal and Bangladesh.
Protesters are demanding improvements in education, housing, and employment, while expressing strong opposition to systemic corruption. While these demonstrations are often driven by shared grievances regarding economic precarity and the limitations of liberal democracies to improve material conditions, they have also seen instances of violence. In response to recent vandalism, France and Italy have deployed military forces to restore order.
The unrest reflects a broader questioning of current economic and political orders, as young people face increasing uncertainty despite formal democratic rights.
