Generation Z reshapes workplace expectations across the Balkans

Generation Z, people born between 1997 and 2012, is increasingly influencing how companies in Bosnia‑Herzegovina and Serbia organize work, communicate with staff and design benefits. Employers report that young workers value not only salary but also alignment with personal values, opportunities for development and a balance between professional and private life.

Flexibility has become a core demand: many expect hybrid or remote arrangements when the job allows, as well as adaptable schedules that give them control over their workload. Mental‑health considerations are also prominent; Gen Z prefers workplaces that openly discuss stress, offer counseling and support programs, and avoid rigid hierarchies. In addition, trends such as prioritising real‑world social interaction, stable employment, regular income and better sleep hygiene are shaping their job choices.

These shifts suggest that Balkan employers must adapt policies, enhance employee well‑being initiatives and communicate purpose‑driven values to attract and retain Generation Z talent.
