Generation Z shifts toward high-risk finance and live commerce
Generation Z is increasingly adopting a trend described as ‘financial nihilism’ due to rising living costs, stagnant wages, and the perceived inaccessibility of traditional wealth-building methods like homeownership. Research from the Urban Institute and studies by the University of Chicago and Northwestern University suggest that as the likelihood of purchasing property decreases, young people tend to shift toward riskier financial behaviors. This includes higher engagement with cryptocurrencies—found in the portfolios of 42% of Gen Z investors—and prediction markets.
Parallel to these speculative trends, a new wave of entrepreneurship is emerging through live auction platforms. Moving away from traditional influencer models, young entrepreneurs are generating significant revenue, sometimes exceeding $100,000 per month, by hosting interactive live-streamed sales. This model, which has seen massive growth in China and is now expanding in the United States and Europe, allows sellers to auction various goods ranging from luxury streetwear and electronics to collectibles in real-time.
