Generation Z shuns manager roles, pressuring European firms

Global research shows that only about 6 % of Generation Z employees want senior‑management positions, preferring work‑life balance over promotions and higher pay. Tomasz Szklarski, CEO of Enpulse, told Euronews that the main reason for this reluctance is the growing responsibility that managerial roles entail.

In recent years the average number of direct reports per manager has doubled, rising from roughly six employees to around twelve. The larger teams increase pressure on managers, who must meet business targets, answer to boards, and support the development and wellbeing of bigger workforces.

Companies across Europe are reporting difficulty finding and preparing the next generation of leaders, a problem compounded by the continent’s demographic decline and shrinking labour pool. Experts warn that without new managers, organizational efficiency and economic performance in Europe could suffer.
