Generational shifts in the teaching profession

Modern schools in Greece are seeing the coexistence of three distinct generations of educators: Generation X, Millennials, and Generation Z. While they share the same professional goal of teaching, their career paths have been shaped by vastly different economic, social, and technological landscapes.

Generation X teachers entered a workforce where permanent appointments and long-term stability were the standard, often leading to a single career path from appointment to retirement. In contrast, Millennials faced a landscape of increased academic qualifications—including master's degrees—but also encountered economic crises, unemployment, and rising job insecurity, challenging the idea that more education guarantees stability.

Generation Z educators are entering a market where uncertainty and frequent changes are considered a norm. Despite possessing high levels of digital literacy, foreign language skills, and various certifications, many spend years working as substitute teachers, moving between regions and accumulating points in an attempt to secure permanent positions.
