Generative AI challenges traditional academic evaluation methods

Carlos Barraza Rojas, a professor at Universidad del Alba, argues that generative artificial intelligence is challenging traditional academic evaluation methods. The rise of AI allows students to produce coherent, well-argued texts and reports in seconds, creating what researchers call the ‘black box effect’ of evaluation, where educators can no longer be certain if a high-quality final product reflects actual student comprehension or merely algorithmic output.

Rather than relying on fallible AI detectors or prohibition, the text suggests that educational systems must be redesigned. The proposed solution is ‘authentic assessment,’ which shifts the focus from the final product to the learning process itself. This includes evaluating a student's ability to justify decisions, transfer knowledge to new contexts, and demonstrate the reasoning behind their work.
