Generative AI creates new freelance roles while threatening creative incomes
The rise of generative artificial intelligence is creating a dual impact on the freelance workforce, characterized by both economic anxiety and the emergence of new service niches.
A University of Cambridge report indicates significant concern among creative professionals; 51% of surveyed UK novelists believe AI could entirely replace their fiction-writing work. Furthermore, 39% of these novelists reported that generative AI has already negatively impacted their income, with 85% anticipating future earnings declines.
Conversely, a new sector of “AI remediation” is growing. Data from Upwork shows that job postings requiring humans to fix, refine, or complete AI-generated work have increased by 70% year-over-year. This growth is particularly sharp in software and creative sectors, where such roles have increased by 8.3x and 7.9x respectively since 2023. Research suggests that many workers now spend several hours per week revising or redoing AI outputs, often referred to as “workslop.”
