Generative AI projected to raise US wages by 21% and cut inequality, while Uzbekistan eyes AI‑driven growth
A study by Lukas Althoff (Stanford) and Hugo Reichardt (CREI, Barcelona) uses a detailed labour‑market model to forecast that generative AI could increase average US wages by about 21 % and markedly reduce wage inequality. The researchers identify three mechanisms – augmentation, automation and “simplification” – and argue that the latter, which lowers the skill level required for many tasks, drives the inequality‑reduction effect. Their model estimates that AI can fully automate roughly 22 % of tasks, save workers 20 % of their time on others, and cut average skill requirements by 18 %.
Separately, Ulugbek Mirzamukhamedov frames AI as the next transformative economic engine, likening its potential impact to oil’s role in the industrial age. He stresses that human morality must guide AI development and highlights Uzbekistan’s chance to become a regional AI leader, urging policy and investment to capture the “cognitive civilisation” that AI promises.
