Generative AI to impact 11.5 million Vietnamese workers
Estimates from the International Labour Organization (ILO) suggest that by 2026, approximately 11.5 million workers in Vietnam—about one-fifth of the workforce—will work in roles where certain tasks could be impacted by generative AI.
Female workers are disproportionately affected, with a 24.1% impact rate compared to 17.8% for men. This trend aligns with ILO research across 84 countries, showing that female-dominated sectors are nearly twice as likely to be impacted by generative AI due to higher concentrations in clerical, administrative, and business support roles.
Experts note that while AI may automate specific tasks like drafting documents or processing files, it is not necessarily replacing entire professions. Dr. Vo Thi Hong Diem of RMIT University Vietnam emphasizes that the challenge lies in upskilling workers to handle higher-value tasks and ensuring women are adequately represented in the design and management of these emerging technologies.
