German hotels prioritize personal hospitality over luxury amenities

Recent studies show that personal attention and friendliness are the top drivers of guest satisfaction in German hotels. The State of Hospitality Report 2026 found that 72 percent of guests name personal attention as the most important factor for a successful stay, while 71 percent rate friendliness as decisive.

Bernd Strunk, chief executive of the consultancy GENESYS, argues that genuine hospitality cannot be purchased and must complement modern technology. A joint study by Hampton by Hilton and Goldsmiths, University of London confirms that friendly service makes a stay feel noticeably more positive, leaves a longer impression, and makes guests feel more welcome. While digital check‑in and mobile payment improve convenience, Strunk stresses they should never replace personal interaction. Small gestures – a warm greeting, genuine interest, personalized recommendations – have a disproportionate effect on online ratings, word‑of‑mouth referrals and repeat business. Family‑run hotels, in particular, benefit from this personal touch.
