Genetec report: Retailers expand physical security use beyond loss prevention

Genetec Inc. has released its ‘2026 State of Physical Security Report’, revealing that global retailers are increasingly treating physical security as a strategic business function rather than just a tool for loss prevention.

According to the research, over 60% of retailers aim to use security data to improve operational efficiency within security departments, while an equal percentage prioritize enhancing overall safety and security. Additionally, 55% of respondents focus on regulatory compliance, and 48% utilize security data to improve both customer and employee experiences.

The report highlights that aging infrastructure remains a significant hurdle, with 40% of retailers citing outdated physical security systems and 33% noting aging IT infrastructure as major challenges. To address these issues, many companies are pursuing measured modernization strategies. Approximately 54% of retailers plan to leverage existing technology to meet new challenges, while 51% intend to implement AI to streamline security processes.
