Genetic counselors become central to expanding precision medicine

Precision medicine is increasingly applied across multiple medical specialties, leveraging advances in genomics, artificial intelligence, next‑generation sequencing and digital health. Its use spans oncology, cardiology, neurology, infectious diseases, rare diseases and diabetes, offering improved diagnostic accuracy, personalized therapies and reduced adverse drug reactions.

Carrie Haverty, president of the National Society of Genetic Counselors, says the profession now works across prenatal care, oncology, cardiology, neurology, primary‑care teams and research labs, aiming to make genomic care more accessible and equitable. “Now, every clinician is touching genomics in their provision of healthcare, and genetic counselors are part of that,” she said, highlighting their expanding role in patient support, advocacy and product development.
