Genetic mutation linked to Kent meningitis B epidemic
Researchers from the University of Oxford have identified that a deadly meningitis B epidemic in Kent, which affected 21 young people in March 2026, was driven by a bacterial strain that acquired genetic material from other bacteria. This genetic acquisition made the strain unusually effective at causing severe disease.
The outbreak resulted in two deaths and nine intensive care admissions. While the mutation increased virulence, researchers noted it may also explain why the epidemic did not spread more widely. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) and Oxford researchers have warned that similar high-virulence strains could emerge, necessitating enhanced genomic surveillance and rapid public health responses.
