Black celebrities and the science of cheek dimples

Cheek dimples are a distinct facial feature caused by a minor genetic variation where the zygomaticus major muscle splits into two parts. This anatomical trait is typically present from birth and is considered harmless.

It is estimated that between 20 and 30 percent of the global population possesses dimples. The trait is not recessive, meaning children of parents with dimples have a 50 to 100 percent chance of inheriting them. Notable Black celebrities with this feature include Beyoncé, Nicki Minaj, Usher, LL Cool J, and the late Aaliyah.
