Genetic Taste Preferences Linked to Overeating, Obesity and Chocolate Craving Concerns
A large genome‑wide association study using the UK Biobank identified genetic variants that predispose individuals to prefer sweet, salty or fatty foods. Researchers created a composite genetic score that correlates with higher consumption of hyper‑palatable items such as sugary drinks and fried foods, and with increased risk of obesity and type‑2 diabetes. The findings were presented by Julie Gervis, a post‑doctoral fellow at Massachusetts General Hospital, at the Nutrition 2026 meeting in Maryland.
Separate health information notes that chocolate cravings can reflect physiological factors such as magnesium deficiency, hormonal fluctuations during menstrual cycles, or the brain’s release of serotonin, dopamine and endorphins, suggesting a complex interplay of nutrients, hormones and mood that may drive cravings.
