Genetic testing of newborn blood could reveal childhood cancer risks

A study published in Nature Communications suggests that genetic testing using blood samples taken immediately after birth could identify risks for childhood cancer. Researchers analyzed DNA from dried blood spots of nearly 2,000 children in Michigan who were diagnosed with malignant solid tumors or central nervous system tumors by age eight.

By examining samples collected at birth, scientists were able to identify specific hereditary genetic variants present from the beginning of life that are associated with an increased risk of certain tumors. While these findings do not guarantee a cancer diagnosis, they offer the potential for much earlier monitoring and intervention before symptoms appear.
