Genetics and family history as risk factors for disease
Medical experts clarify that while family history can indicate a genetic predisposition to certain conditions, it is not a definitive diagnosis. Genetic factors often act as risk factors that interact with environment, age, and lifestyle habits rather than acting as sole determinants.
In the case of cancer, data from the National Cancer Institute (INCA) indicates that only 5% to 10% of cases are hereditary. Similarly, for type 2 diabetes, while family history is a significant factor, the manifestation of the disease depends on a multifactorial combination of diet, body weight, and physical activity.
Research also suggests a genetic influence on the recurrence of urinary tract infections (UTIs). Certain genetic variants can affect mucosal sensitivity and the innate immune response to bacteria like Escherichia coli. However, medical specialists emphasize that anatomy and lifestyle remain decisive factors in managing these infections.
