North Rhine-Westphalia initiates nearly 12,000 fines for school truancy

District governments in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) have initiated nearly 12,000 fine proceedings due to violations of compulsory schooling in the past year, representing a 25 percent increase compared to 2024. According to a survey by the German Press Agency, over 1,100 of these cases were directly linked to unauthorized school absences during holiday periods.

Many families risk fines of up to 1,000 euros for extending vacations without permission, often to secure cheaper flights. Authorities in districts such as Arnsberg, Düsseldorf, and Münster have already recorded thousands of new proceedings for the current year. For instance, Münster reported 2,033 cases so far this year, including 265 related to school holidays.

Official guidelines from the Ministry of Education state that leaves of absence are only permissible if they are not intended to extend holidays, utilize cheaper travel rates, or avoid peak traffic periods.
