Geneva to Host 2026 World Chess Championship between India's Gukesh and Uzbekistan's Sindarov

The International Chess Federation (FIDE) confirmed that the 2026 World Chess Championship match will be held in Geneva, Switzerland from November 25 to December 15. The bout pits reigning champion Gukesh Dommaraju of India against challenger Javokhir Sindarov of Uzbekistan. Both players will be 20 years old, making it the youngest title match in chess history. The match will consist of 14 classical games, with the first player to reach 7.5 points declared the winner; if tied, rapid tie‑breaks will decide the champion.

Gukesh earned the title in December 2024 by defeating Ding Liren in Singapore, becoming the youngest world champion at 18 and the second Indian after Viswanathan Anand. Sindarov qualified after winning the FIDE Candidates Tournament in Cyprus in April 2026, having also captured the FIDE World Cup in 2025. Bids for the 2026 match came from India, the United States and Cyprus, but FIDE chose Geneva as a neutral venue. Interim FIDE President Viswanathan Anand said the decision was “after carefully considering all the proposals, FIDE has decided to stage the match on neutral soil and bring it to Geneva.” Swiss Chess Federation President André Vögtlin hailed the event as a landmark moment for chess in Switzerland.
