Genicular artery embolization shows potential for knee osteoarthritis relief

A meta-analysis published in ‘Skeletal Radiology’ suggests that genicular artery embolization (GAE) may alleviate pain and improve function in patients with knee osteoarthritis. The analysis, which reviewed 18 studies involving 534 patients, noted improvements in symptoms that sometimes lasted up to twelve months.

However, the German Society for Endoprosthetics (AE) is urging a cautious interpretation of these findings. Experts, including Professor Georgi Wassilew of University Medicine Greifswald, point out that the reviewed studies were predominantly uncontrolled. This makes it difficult to determine whether the reported improvements are directly caused by the embolization procedure or other factors.

The AE emphasizes the need to distinguish between observing patient improvement and providing scientific proof that the specific treatment is the cause of that improvement. They advocate for further research, including studies with sham treatments, to confirm the additional benefit of GAE compared to control treatments.
