Geno Auriemma warns WNBA discourse is being hijacked by politics
Legendary UConn women’s basketball coach Geno Auriemma has expressed concern that the WNBA is being “hijacked” by political discourse rather than focusing on the sport itself. Speaking ahead of a new documentary, Auriemma warned that the league is receiving significant attention, but cautioned that if the conversation remains centered on protest movements and social issues rather than the brilliance of the players and the game, it may alienate viewers.
Auriemma specifically addressed the recent debates surrounding transgender athletes in women’s sports, which gained traction following comments from Indiana Fever player Sophie Cunningham. Auriemma questioned why the topic is being treated as a major issue when there are currently no transgender players competing in the WNBA. He criticized individuals who he believes are using these debates for “personal gain” and suggested that the league and its stakeholders should focus on how they wish to be perceived by the public.
