Genoa gelato shop launches solidarity initiative
An artisanal gelato shop in the historic center of Genoa has launched a solidarity initiative known as ‘gelato sospeso’ (suspended gelato). Similar to the ‘caffè sospeso’ tradition, customers can pay for an extra gelato to be provided free of charge to children from families in financial difficulty.
The project is part of a broader national campaign promoted by the association Salvamamme. Participants can contribute by purchasing an extra cone, leaving their change, or adding a small donation to their bill. Participating shops display campaign posters and often use transparent containers to collect funds. According to initiative data, the project facilitates approximately 50,000 donations annually. The current campaign is scheduled to run throughout the summer until October 31.
