Genoa launches subsidised summer stays for seniors

The municipality of Genoa has revived a summer‑holiday scheme for residents aged over 65, reinstating the programme after more than three decades. Organized under the “Estate Sicura 2026” plan, the pilot offers 7‑day, 6‑night trips to coastal, mountain and hillside locations such as Cavalese, Roccaforte di Mondovì, Falcade, Bellaria‑Igea Marina and Riccione. Packages cost between €300 and €600 per person and include round‑trip travel, double‑room accommodation, full board, recreational activities and physical‑exercise sessions. Contributions are adjusted according to the household’s ISEE, with the poorest participants receiving the stay free of charge. Priority is given to seniors already served by social services or living in areas affected by large‑scale construction works. Funding comes from the profits of Genoa pharmacies earmarked for the “COLIVINGenova” project, and the initiative is coordinated with pensioners’ unions (CGIL, CISL, UIL), the Auser Liguria association and local volunteer groups. Mayor Silvia Salis highlighted the measure as a modern‑twist on historic welfare tools aimed at reducing isolation and improving quality of life for the city’s ageing population.
