Italian police tighten immigration controls in Liguria and Rimini

In Genoa, the provincial committee for public order and safety approved a set of measures aimed at the neighbourhood of San Fruttuoso, where several centres host unaccompanied foreign minors. The plan calls for increased patrols, stricter inspections of the facilities, a possible redistribution of minors across the region and, for young offenders, the option to move them to institutions outside Liguria. The committee also ordered stronger policing in the city’s nightlife areas during evenings and nights.

In Rimini, the immigration office of the local police intensified checks on irregular migrants throughout June. Four separate actions were taken: the forced removal of a 39‑year‑old Georgian caught with forged documents; the expulsion of an Albanian man with a long record of theft, assault, robbery and drug dealing; the escorted departure of a Senegalese national after his asylum claim was rejected; and the arrest of a Guinean citizen for presenting a counterfeit passport while applying to renew his work permit. These operations were carried out in coordination with the border police and, in one case, with a security detail from Bologna.

Together, the actions reflect a broader push by Italian authorities to reinforce security around migrant reception centres and to curb irregular immigration through targeted enforcement.
