Genoa San Giorgio Bridge Opens, Replacing Collapsed Morandi Span

On 3 August 2020 the new Genoa San Giorgio bridge was inaugurated, and traffic opened on 4 August 2020. The structure replaces the Morandi viaduct that collapsed on 14 August 2018, killing 43 people. Designed by architect and life senator Renzo Piano, the 1,067‑metre bridge was built by the consortium of Salini Impregilo (now Webuild) and shipbuilder Fincantieri in a record 15‑month schedule.

The ceremony was attended by President Sergio Mattarella, who met families of the Morandi victims, and by Genoa mayor Marco Bucci, appointed commissioner for the reconstruction. Officials described the bridge as a symbol of resilience, Italian engineering excellence and hope for the city and the nation.
