Genomic research advances breast cancer care and pediatric diagnosis

In Mexico, Jorge Meléndez Zajgla, director of the National Institute of Genomic Medicine (Inmegen), emphasized the necessity of generating local evidence regarding the genetic, environmental, and social characteristics of the Mexican population to improve breast cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. During the 4th symposium “Sumando esfuerzos en la lucha contra el cáncer de mama,” he noted that genomic analysis and data science are essential for developing personalized treatments and identifying specific risk factors.

In Spain, the “Baby Lince” project, a collaboration between Son Espases and the Hospital de La Paz in Madrid, aims to accelerate genetic diagnosis for critically ill minors. The initiative seeks to sequence the genomes of pediatric patients suspected of having genetic diseases within a maximum of 14 days. This reorganization of clinical coordination aims to provide timely information that can influence real-time clinical management, addressing the issue where traditional genetic diagnoses often arrived too late to benefit the patient's immediate care.
