Genova and Florence launch senior summer programs to combat loneliness

The municipality of Genova revived its "Estate Sicura 2026" initiative, offering week‑long summer stays for residents aged 65 and over. Participants can choose among five destinations – seaside towns Bellaria‑Igea Marina and Riccione, hill town Roccaforte di Mondovì, and mountain resorts Cavalese and Falcade. Costs range from 300 to 600 euros and are partially or fully subsidised based on the ISEE income indicator, with contributions up to 100 % for the lowest‑income seniors. About 350 places are planned, with priority given to those living near major urban construction sites and to socially or economically vulnerable elders.

In Florence, Unicoop Firenze partnered with the regional UISP committee to run an "Estate Attiva" program for seniors over 70 from 22 June to 24 July 2026. Daily morning sessions in cooperative community rooms include gentle gymnastics, creative workshops, cultural walks, and games, followed by a Friday lunch. The programme concludes with a bus‑trip to the seaside at Marina di Pisa. Weekly fees are 50 euros, covering the lunch and the final sea outing. Both projects aim to reduce summer loneliness and promote active aging among Italy’s older citizens.
