Gent Police Crack Down on Pedestrian Zone Violations and Bus Fare Evasion

The Gent police carried out a large‑scale control operation on the Langemunt shopping street, where the zone is reserved for pedestrians between 11:00 and 18:00. Motor‑bike, scooter and e‑step riders caught during the sweep face a €75 fine, which can increase if the rider is also using a smartphone.

In parallel, the police teamed up with De Lijn inspectors to conduct checks on the busy bus line between Gent‑Sint‑Pieters station and the recreational area of Blaarmeersen. Eight De Lijn inspectors and four police officers monitored the Neermeerskaai stop to deter fare‑evasion, a practice that threatens the operator’s revenue. No new incidents were reported during the checks, although a violent bus‑driver attack occurred last August.

Both actions aim to improve safety for pedestrians and public‑transport users while enforcing local traffic and ticket‑validation rules.
