Gentle Monster film explores themes of child abuse and societal silence

Marie Kreutzer’s new film, ‘Gentle Monster’, has been released in German cinemas. Starring Léa Seydoux, Jella Haase, and Catherine Deneuve, the film explores the domestic fallout of child sexual abuse allegations.

The plot follows a concert pianist whose life is upended when police seize her husband’s computer due to suspicions of possessing child abuse material. Rather than focusing on the crimes themselves, the narrative examines the subsequent shock, disbelief, and the societal tendency to remain silent about pedophilia within close-knit circles.

Critics have noted the film’s ability to handle its heavy subject matter without falling into superficiality or excessive gloom. The production features a multilingual family setting, moving between France and southern Germany.
