GEO Group challenges Colorado law targeting Aurora immigration detention center

The GEO Group, which operates Colorado’s sole immigration detention facility in Aurora under a contract with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), has filed a lawsuit against the state. The suit contests House Bill 26-1276, a new Colorado law that mandates more frequent health and safety inspections, imposes civil penalties for non‑compliance, and adds reporting, staffing and minor‑detention requirements.

GEO’s attorneys, led by Fred Yarger, argue the legislation unfairly singles out the Aurora site, creates an additional regulatory burden beyond existing public‑health rules, and conflicts with the federal contract that already requires on‑site medical personnel. The company is seeking a preliminary injunction from U.S. District Court Judge Daniel Domenico to block the law’s enforcement.
