New Jersey officials have launched a civil rights investigation into Delaney Hall, an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention center in Newark managed by the private firm GEO Group. The probe follows the deaths of three immigrants in less than a year: Jean Wilson Brutus in December, Edwin Lopez-Cornejo this past weekend, and an unidentified individual in late July.

Attorney General Jennifer Davenport stated that the state has a "legal and moral duty" to protect civil rights, including the right to humane treatment and adequate medical care. The investigation will examine whether actions or omissions by GEO Group employees violated the rights of detainees.

Reports from detainees have included allegations of spoiled food, inadequate hygiene products, poor ventilation, and medical negligence. These conditions previously triggered hunger strikes and protests between May and June. Governor Mikie Sherrill has called for the facility to be closed, citing instances where the state health department was allegedly denied access for inspections.
