Geoffrey Boycott reveals Harry Brook declined mentorship offer

Former England cricketer Geoffrey Boycott has revealed that he offered mentorship to batter Harry Brook last year, but the offer went unanswered. Speaking on his podcast, ‘Geoffrey Boycott: An Extraordinary Innings’, Boycott stated that Brook’s uncle approached him at Headingley to ask for his opinion on the young player’s game.

Boycott praised Brook’s rare and special talent, noting his timing and physical reach, but expressed concern regarding his tactical approach to Test cricket. He suggested that while Brook has the potential to reach the level of legends like Sachin Tendulkar and Brian Lara, his current tendency to play every ball with a one-day cricket mindset could limit his success in the longer format.

Despite being ranked as the world’s number one Test batter, Brook has not recorded a century in Test cricket for over a year. Boycott highlighted specific instances of poor shot selection, such as scoring 91 against Pakistan at Headingley followed by 15 at Lord’s, as areas where improved thinking could elevate his career.
