Geoffrey Hinton criticizes Donald Trump over AI regulation

Nobel laureate Geoffrey Hinton, often referred to as the ‘godfather of artificial intelligence,’ has criticized U.S. President Donald Trump, calling him a ‘corrupt, senile criminal’ who lacks understanding of AI technology.

In an interview with The Guardian, Hinton expressed concern regarding Trump’s opposition to government regulation of the sector. He argued against the idea that tech companies should self-regulate, comparing the proposal to allowing oil, asbestos, or tobacco companies to manage their own safety standards.

Hinton also addressed Trump’s desire to rename artificial intelligence as ‘superintelligence,’ noting that the term already exists to describe entities smarter than humans. The researcher, who left Google in 2023 to speak freely about AI risks, warned that humanity is creating intelligent beings that could potentially evade human control.
