Geoffrey Hinton warns of AI's cognitive limits and military risks
Nobel laureate and artificial intelligence pioneer Geoffrey Hinton has warned that AI may soon reach a level of intelligence that exceeds human cognitive understanding. Speaking in Tenerife, Hinton suggested that humans might eventually encounter systems capable of grasping concepts that remain fundamentally beyond human reach, noting that if a superior AI asserts something is true, humans may have no choice but to believe it.
Hinton also highlighted the dual dangers of AI in military applications and the spread of disinformation. He emphasized the threat posed by autonomous weapons and the rise of 'AI slop'—synthetic content used to deceive. Regarding the impact on democratic processes, he cautioned that synthetic videos used to corrupt elections are a growing concern that will become increasingly prevalent in the coming weeks.
