Geoje City Council demands Samsung and Hanwha reconsider Busan design center expansion

The Geoje City Council has passed a resolution demanding that Samsung Heavy Industries and Hanwha Ocean reconsider their plans to expand design centers and recruit additional design personnel in the Busan area.

All 16 council members participated in the resolution, which calls for strengthening design capabilities within the Geoje headquarters to foster local expertise and prevent the outflow of high-quality jobs. The council expressed concern that moving core design functions—the “brain” of the shipbuilding industry—to Busan could accelerate youth population decline and regional economic instability.

In addition to the resolution, the council addressed various local administrative matters, including the approval of projects for elderly care, family centers, and climate change response measures.
