Latin America experiences multiple seismic events in Colombia, El Salvador, Ecuador, and Peru

Multiple seismic events were recorded across Latin America on September 2 and 3, 2026.

In Colombia, a magnitude 4.3 earthquake struck Chocó at 12:17 a.m. on September 3, with an epicenter in Istmina at a depth of 43 kilometers. The Servicio Geológico Colombiano noted this follows significant activity in the region, including a 7.4 magnitude earthquake in August. The tremor was felt in several areas, including Cali and Buenaventura.

In El Salvador, a shallow magnitude 3.3 earthquake occurred near San Salvador on the afternoon of September 2. The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources reported a depth of approximately 7.45 kilometers, causing alarm due to its proximity to the surface, though no tsunami threat was identified.

Ecuador recorded a magnitude 3.2 earthquake in the Pastaza province near Puyo on the morning of September 3. The event occurred at a depth of 162 kilometers. In Peru, a magnitude 4.0 earthquake was reported in the Ica region at 8:54 a.m. on September 3, with an epicenter 44 kilometers south of Ica at a depth of 52 kilometers.
