Geologists find surface water triggered early Earth volcanic eruptions
An international team of geologists has discovered that surface water triggered massive volcanic eruptions approximately 3.1 billion years ago, challenging existing scientific assumptions about the early Earth. Led by geochemist Dr. Eric Vandenburg from the University of Adelaide, the study focused on ancient volcanic rocks in the Pilbara region of Western Australia.
Researchers utilized advanced isotope techniques and geochemical analysis on crystallized rock layers to identify a chemical signature of high water content. The findings, published in Nature Communications, suggest that water reached the mantle through a mechanism called ‘slab loss,’ where water-rich, heavy components from the cooler outer crust sank into the hot mantle. This process lowered the melting temperature of the mantle, directly triggering the formation of large magma masses.
The study indicates that the early Earth was a highly dynamic system with continuous material exchange between layers, rather than a static mass of rock. These insights may help scientists understand the initial formation of continents and the evolution of the planet's current geological structure.
