Geometric Power earns praise for $800m electricity investment in Nigeria

Geometric Power and Aba Power have received praise for their integrated electricity model in the Aba Ring-fenced Area of Abia State, Nigeria. The Electricity Consumers Association of Nigeria (ECAN) expressed confidence in the company following a N43 billion investment in smart meters, which has been provided free of charge to over 95 percent of consumers through vendor financing.

ECAN noted that the company has implemented transparent billing, including zero billing on days without electricity, and has taken disciplinary action against staff and partners attempting to solicit unauthorized payments. Recent power disruptions in the region were attributed to natural gas supply cuts to the 188-megawatt Geometric Power Plant rather than systemic failures.

British Deputy High Commissioner Jonny Baxter also commended the project, describing the investment of over $800 million as impressive and innovative. The Aba Ring-fence is unique in Nigeria for its independence from the national grid, utilizing gas-fired turbines to generate and distribute its own power. Plans are reportedly underway to export excess power to the national grid once a new turbine arrives from the United States.
