Geopolitical tensions rise as Russia advances in Ukraine and Houthis seize Mokha

The West faces simultaneous challenges in two major conflicts. In Eastern Europe, Russian forces are reportedly advancing deeper into the Donbas region of Ukraine, with little evidence of a successful Ukrainian counteroffensive.

In the Middle East, Houthi rebels have seized control of the strategic port city of Mokha and Perim Island. This positioning allows them to threaten maritime traffic through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a critical bottleneck connecting the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean.

Control of these waterways by Iran and its allies poses significant economic risks. Following the capture of Mokha, Brent crude oil prices returned to approximately $100 per barrel. Former CIA Director Leon Panetta has warned of the potential for a ‘forever war’ as these conflicts show no immediate signs of resolution.
